Product Review: Mountainsmith K-9 Cube

The first official sign of spring at PetGuide is when canine camping pro Kevin Roberts subtly sends us requests for all the cool, new gear he wants to try. Starting off the season is the Mountainsmith K-9 Cube – does it stand up to Kev’s tough trial? My philosophy has always been: “Have dogs will travel.” I love the outdoors and so does my pack – it’s only natural that my two passions should combine flawlessly. Exploring the great outdoors is an instinct that drives most of my leisure time. And with the hint of warmer temperatures, my need to commune with nature (and my dogs, of course) kicks into high gear. I can see the lawn again… well, at least a good part of it (I do live in Winnipeg, so it takes a little longer for the snow to melt). I don’t need any other encouragement to make a break for it and go camping. And as if Mountainsmith could read my thoughts (get out of my head, you iconic outdoor adventure brand!), the K-9 Cube arrived just in time for my backcountry excursion with Belle. I have to say, the K-9 Cube made packing and carrying Belle’s gear much simple – good news for my aching back! I really appreciated the design of the Cube – its rectangular shape offered plenty of room while still fitting neatly behind the seat of my truck. I was happy with the separate PEVA line food container, which held all of Belle’s food for the stay. Belle is a medium-sized dog, and I could have easily filled it for a week-long trip. The bag itself features three mesh pockets: one on either side of the bag, and one sewn into the inside of the bag’s top. I used one of the outside pockets for keep poop bags, so they were handy and accessible, and the other to store a couple of guide books. I slipped in Belle’s camping leash into the top pocket – this is the leash that keeps her from roaming around and getting into trouble when we are camping.

According to a new report on city park systems, dog parks are gaining ground… meaning, off-leash dog parks are growing faster than any other type of park in America’s largest cities. We love our pups, and we want them to enjoy the same socialization and exercise options that we have. Based on the numbers, the demand for more dog parks is going to continue – last year saw a six percent growth, while in the past five years, that number leaps up to 20 percent! What Supplements Should I Give My Puppy?

As a proud pet parent to a new pup, you want to make sure your furry addition is healthy right from the get-go. And that may mean adding the right supplements to her diet. If you’re bringing a puppy home, it’s natural to want her to get the best start in life. As long as you’re feeding a premium, high-quality dog food, she won’t necessarily need any additional supplements in her diet. That said, there are numerous dog-suitable supplements available that many dog owners swear by, so if you feel better giving your pup supplements then you should go ahead and do so. The only thing to be careful of is correct dosage, as some supplements can have detrimental effects in high quantities. If you’re unsure how much of a supplement you should be feeding your puppy, consult her veterinarian for advice. These are just some of the supplements that may be beneficial for your precious pup. Essential Fatty Acids Essential fatty acids (EFAs), such as omega-3 and -6, are found in a number of supplements, most commonly fish oil, hemp oil and coconut oil. While the benefits of EFAs haven’t been definitively proven, some studies suggest that they may promote a healthy heart in canines. They’re also known to be good for encouraging healthy skin and fur. However, it’s important to note that if your dog does have chronic digestive issues, you should first rule out any underlying medical issues with her vet. Since it’s full of B-vitamins and contains a range of other vitamins and minerals, it promotes general good health. A lot of dog owners believe that it’s one of the best supplements for giving dogs shiny, healthy-looking coats. Some also believe it’s generally beneficial for the immune system. However, yeast is a potential allergen so be careful to only get it from a high-quality source and be careful with dosage. What Supplements Shouldn’t I Feed My Puppy? Pups of eight weeks and under don’t have fully developed blood cells, so the small amount of toxins found in garlic can prove to be dangerous. Heartworm Treatment: What Are Your Options?

By the time you see the symptoms of this potentially dangerous disease, it’s already too late. Don’t procrastinate – get the 411 on heartworm treatments available for your dog. Heartworm is a dangerous and deadly disease that is transmitted to dogs and cats by mosquitos. This disease progresses slowly and, unfortunately, most infected animals do not show symptoms of the disease for a full six months after the infection when the disease has progressed to the final stages. Heartworm is easy to prevent by simply having your dog tested annually and by giving him monthly heartworm preventive pills. If you fail to protect your dog and he gets heartworm, your treatment options are few and, depending on the severity of the disease, they may not even be effective. Symptoms of Heartworm As it has already been mentioned, dogs that contract heartworm typically don’t show any clinical signs until the disease has already progressed. Why? Because the moment of infection occurs when a heartworm-carrying mosquito transfers infective larvae into the dog’s blood stream. It takes about 6 months for those larvae to travel through the dog’s blood stream to the heart and lungs where they develop into adults and then begin reproducing. It isn’t until the heartworms begin reproducing that a blood test will pick up the infection – it is also at this point that the dog may begin showing symptoms. As a result of this clogging, blood flow to other major organs is compromised and those organs may eventually begin to fail. Some of the most common signs of heartworm include a dry cough, difficulty breathing, weakness or listlessness, unexplained weight loss, and loss of exercise tolerance. In very severe cases, the dog’s legs and abdomen may swell from excess fluid and the dog may go into congestive heart failure. Options for Heartworm Treatment If your dog tests positive for heartworm there is a certain protocol you should follow. Your first step is to stabilize your dog – this may involve treating some of the symptoms of the disease that have begun to manifest. You should also restrict your dog’s level of exercise because physical exertion will only increase the rate at which the heartworm causes damage to the dog’s already damaged lungs and heart. After your dog has been stabilized your veterinarian will begin treatment. The only approved treatment for heartworm is an arsenic-based drug called Immiticide. Given in two or three injections, this drug will kill the adult heartworms residing in the blood vessels of the heart. Though Immiticide is the fastest and most effective method of treatment, there is another option. For less severe infections, it may be adequate to treat the dog with a combination of Ivermectin and Doxycycline. This method works more slowly than Immiticide, serving to weaken the heartworm so it cannot reproduce. This treatment method can last for up to 33 weeks, whereas the Immiticide method can work quickly and your dog may test negative for heartworm after six months. So you always felt you had a special bond with your pooch – a certain indescribable chemistry. Well, you’re right! In fact research shows that the feeling of connectedness you experience when looking down at your little buddy is in fact a chemical reaction akin to what a mom experiences when nursing her newborn child. And believe it or not, he feels it too! Yes, both dogs and their pet parents get a spike in the chemical oxytocin – also dubbed the “love hormone” – when they make eye contact. Not the fleeting glance as you let him out the back door, but that special, long-drawn gaze that every pet parent understands. In fact, one of the key roles of oxytocin in humans is to help a parent and infant bond. What’s also interesting is that dogs don’t use this eye contact approach to build bonds with other dogs – it’s reserved just for humans. Which is what has researchers thinking man’s best friend may have secured a special place in your heart by tapping into an ancient human bonding pathway. A study conducted by the Companion Animal Research Lab at Azabu University in Japan states that as humans, eye contact between one another is much more meaningful. It’s a form of communication that helps us build affiliations and one that we are very sensitive to. The end result is that dogs that can use the eye-gaze technique on owners “efficiently” would have more benefits from humans. Hmmm… are you beginning to feel manipulated too? Don’t, because it goes both ways. The science involved in this study is fascinating. The team in Japan measured the oxytocin levels of dogs and their owners before and after they spent 30 minutes together. After the “quality time” sessions with lots of gazing, patting and verbal interaction both showed increases in the levels of oxytocin in their urine. And the higher the level for humans, the higher for dogs. In similar experiments with wolves, the researchers found no such increases — even though the wolves were interacting with people who had raised them from pups. In a second experiment, dogs received a spritz of oxytocin nasal spray. Apparently the gals stared longer at their owners afterward, and both man and dog showed a rise in oxytocin as a result. The findings suggest that the oxytocin feedback loop can cross species boundaries, at least between man and his best friend. So apparently our relationship with dogs is in many ways, similar to our relationships with people. But dogs aren’t the only ones to have found a way to work the system. Studies suggest our feline companions have consciously evolved their once harsh and aggressive screech to something a little more appealing to owners. What Is Cherry Eye In Dogs?

I spy with my little eye something that looks red and swollen! Cherry Eye – known as the third eyelid, is not too uncommon an issue, especially in young dogs. Luckily, there are easy solutions. Let’s go over some important facts about cherry eye in dogs and how to fix it. Did you know your dog has three eyelids? Most people don’t – that is, until Fido develops cherry eye. But let’s go back to that third eyelid… This clear lid is called a nictitating membrane, and it houses the glands that are vital to your dog’s vision through their tear production. So, it turns out this thing you never even knew existed is actually pretty important. Cherry eye is common in young dogs under the age of one or two, and has a prevalence in certain breeds, most of them small in size and stature. Breeds such as Lhasa Apso, Boston Terrier, American Cocker Spaniel, the English Bulldog, or the Shih Tzu are especially prone to this issue, but not exclusive to it. Cherry eye in dogs occurs when this tear gland pops out, so to speak, appearing as a red bulge in the corner of the eye – much like a cherry, hence the condition’s name. When you see it, you’ll know what we’re talking about. The meaty mass is often accompanied by abnormal tearing and oozing. What is more, both eyes can develop cherry eye issue, but at different stages in your dog’s life. Still, it isn’t a reason for excess worry, as solutions are often simple and efficient, especially if the issue is caught early on. What causes it? No need for pet-parent guilt here, your pooch was probably born with a weak ligament that attaches the gland to the membrane, which can cause the gland to literally flip out. When displaced, the gland doesn’t circulate blood properly and thus, swells, reddens, and becomes a big, ugly eye-blob. While certainly gross looking, cherry eye itself isn’t painful – except maybe to your dog’s ego. Ouch! But the longer it’s untreated and the gland left exposed, the higher the risk of your dog developing inflammation, infection, and damage that can compromise tear production and vision down the road. The one major side effect that you will notice is an overproduction of tears. Breeds such as the bulldog are already prone to excess tears – but if a cherry eye appears, this production of tears quickly becomes abnormal. Back in the day, before the importance of this tear gland was fully understood, the treatment for the protrusion was to simply remove it. But the “when in doubt, take it out” cure-all is not ideal, knowing what we now know. After all, it was put there for a reason, right? Removal of the gland, which produces approximately 40 percent of the eye’s tears, can result in dry eye, discomfort, and a medication regime from here on in. Short of lopping off the offending protrusion, there are some other treatment options that could do the trick. Topical versus Surgical Treatment If caught early, the gland can sometimes be eased back into place using manual massage and manipulation, antibiotics or steroids, and in some cases, cherry eye in dogs sometimes just corrects itself. Of course, manual treatment sounds ideal: spot the third eye early on and you can apply gentle massage movements in a downward and diagonal direction. As you massage towards the snout, with your pet’s eyes closed, you can gently ease the gland back into place and fix the issue. At times, antibiotics and steroids will be enough too. What is more, the cherry eye can sometimes fix itself! But in all these cases, since you’re not actually fixing the weakest link, the chances of a relapse prolapse within days or even hours are pretty high. So, either bone up on your eye massaging abilities, or consider surgical treatment as a more permanent solution to the problem. The “pocket’ or “envelope” technique tops the charts as the most common procedure, according to the American College of Veterinary Ophthamologists. As the name suggests, it involves cutting a new pocket in the third eyelid, tucking the gland back into place, and stitching the pocket shut to the gland doesn’t sneak back out again. Viola! Alternately, the gland can also be tacked to the orbital rim to secure it in place. Unfortunately, each surgery comes with risks and none offer a 100 percent guarantee that this recurring problem will be corrected once and for all. Sure, this procedure with cutting and stitching doesn’t sound too appealing, especially for your pupper. But in the hands of a skilled and seasoned vet, this procedure can be considered safe, quick, and efficient. If the hand massage, antibiotics, or steroids don’t help – or the gland prolapse keeps recurring, this simple surgery might be the last and ideal solution. One thing you need to keep in mind: once it arises, the problem needs to be solved. If left untreated the prolapsed gland can be the source of many new complications. This gland is responsible for up to 50% of tear production in dogs, and tears are very important in the life of a healthy pupper. If you leave the protruding gland exposed for extended periods of time, you risk trauma, lack of tears, and a secondary infection. A dry eye can lead to eye inflammation and from there on the problems just keep piling up. Whatever the solution you opt for, aftercare will be necessary. This is especially important if a surgical treatment is chosen. The usual aftercare involves antibiotic eye ointment up to three times per day for a period of up to two weeks. This might vary from pet to pet and per your vet’s instructions. Still, even after surgery, a new relapse of the cherry eye is still a possibility, and will require more treatment. But this is not a reason to worry. With good care the problem can be solved and your doggo can live a normal life.
