The  Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County in Washington broke all the possible records with their recent string of successful adoptions. Ever since the shelter has been in existence, they have never seen such a huge number of adoptions – the record was officially broken when all of their 287 shelter pets were adopted in just one week!

When the shelter’s staff found themselves at absolute full capacity – with 120 sheltered pets and about 350+ pets waiting for adoption – they knew that they had to find a unique solution. "We were running out of kennel space," Lindsey Heaney, the shelter’s director of communications., said to  Fox News. "We were having to put multiple dogs in the kennel instead of just one in each."

So, they came up with an interesting idea. In an attempt to shelter these animals as quickly as possible, they spread the word to the Tacoma community and waived all adoption fees during that one week – between July 18th to July 23rd.

The response was overwhelming. In the 135-year-old history of this shelter, such reaction from the public was never seen before. People from all over the area flocked to the shelter, hoping to provide a  forever home to a pet in need. And soon enough, a line was formed, running all the way outside of the shelter, and onto the street. “The community really showed up for us and the shelter pets," Heaney stated. "When we put out that messaging, being a state of emergency for the shelter, I think the community heard us.”

Soon enough, the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County found themselves with a lot of the pet bunks empty, and the overcrowded kennels were finally emptied. It was the best of both worlds: folks who were eager to get a pet were given a chance to do so free of charge; while all the pets waiting in line for a home, soon found one! And the shelter was allowed to continue working on its mission, with renewed capacity and a bit of respite as well. It just goes to show how great results can be achieved when the community gets together.
