Even if the change is a great one, it’s still a big change, and it can have an impact on your new pet’s behavior. The air of excitement and the new period of adjustment can even catch you unprepared and lead you to make some beginner’s mistakes when it comes to welcoming a new dog into the household. However, there are a few things you can do when bringing a dog home from the shelter that will make the first few days in your dog’s new home happy and calming, as well as help to establish your place as pack leader. Ease them into it We know that the first thing you want to do when bringing a dog home from the shelter is to shower your new pooch with hugs and kisses. But hold off. A walk around the neighborhood is a great way to introduce your pup to his new surroundings, and it gives him a chance to give the area a good sniffing. Give them the apartment tour Now it’s time to go inside. But don’t just let your new shelter dog off the leash to investigate his new home. You’re the pack leader, remember? It’s your job to set down the rules right from the start. You go through doors and entranceways first, followed by the dog. Lead the dog around your home on a leash, going from room to room (you always taking the lead and going in first). Spend about 10 minutes in each room, letting him sniff around. Be sure that other family members don’t come rushing at the dog with kisses and hugs (we established why earlier in the article). Other family members should greet the dog calmly, not talking to him and letting him sniff them. Gradual introductions are best in any case, especially with shelter dogs, You might not know their past, but it’s likely to have been a ruff one if they ended up surrendered to a shelter. This is why it’s best to keep their stress of meeting new people to a minimum and give them time to adjust to all the changes before expecting them to become a social butterfly. Prepare a safe haven beforehand Your dog’s bed or crate should be set up before bringing a dog home. Save his area for the last stop on the tour. Give him a chance to sniff it and leave a few bones or treats out for him – that way, the dog will always see this as a positive place. If your dog is calm at this time, you can start petting and showing him affection. Rub his head, belly or back, but resist giving him a hug just yet. It’s very important that your dog is calm for this part. If he is still hyper, take him for another walk to help tire him out. A cozy corner of your home where your rescue dog can retreat for some alone time is absolutely crucial. If things get too overwhelming and he feels like he needs a timeout, a comfy bed in the corner of the room or a reassuring nest that can be a furnished crate are just what he needs to relax. Once you’ve commenced the tour of the house and he’s been introduced to the other family members, feel free to give your shelter dog some food and water. Also, be sure to take frequent bathroom breaks until you’ve established a routine. Going to sleep Your first day of excitement is not over yet- it’s time for your dog to sleep in their new home for the first time. It can be hard for a dog to relax and go to sleep somewhere where they are not accustomed to, but the fact they’ll be knackered from all the excitement works in your favor. However, sleeping arrangements will still require a bit of an effort from your side. Most people opt for setting up a crate for their rescue’s first night in their home, even if they are not planning on crating their dog in the future. Not only that a crate will ensure that your new family member doesn’t go out and make a mess of things while he’s still adjusting, but it will also give him a sense of safety and security to have a secluded nook to curl up in. You can even place the crate in your bedroom if you want him to know you’re nearby and there’s nothing to be afraid of. Consider Fido’s Fuel In all likelihood, you’ll be getting your new furry best friend used to food and treats he may not be used to. If you want to continue to feed him the food he was eating with his breeder or the shelter/rescue, what-have-you, that’s fine. But it’s likely you’ll want to switch it up and you’ll want to be careful about how you do. According to the AKC, if you switch your dog’s food too quickly, you may see him suffer from signs of gastrointestinal distress. This could look like vomiting, diarrhea or even a lack of desire to eat. It could also look like him wanting to wolf everything he can down because he’s simply not absorbing enough nutrients from what he is eating. The AKC recommends the following schedule (if at all possible and you have access to the current/old food) for switching a dog’s food when you first get them: Day 1: 25% new diet and 75% old diet.Day 3: 50% new diet and 50% old diet.Day 5: 75% new diet and 25% old diet.Day 7: 100% new diet. This will also be the time you learn about your dog’s sensitivities, as if this timeframe doesn’t seem to do the trick, you may need to give him a bit longer of an adjustment as you mix the foods. You will never go wrong supplementing with a great probiotic/fiber/digestive enzyme supplement to keep gastrointestinal distress down and increase his overall gut health quality. Mostly, you’ll want to watch how he does, and make sure that he adjusts to the new change well. If it seems he adjusts too well, and eats like he’s never eaten before, you may want to look at feeders that will slow that gulping down. Dogs who eat too quickly can deal with issues like regurgitation too. If you’ve rescued your dog from the shelter, odds are they’re not used to not worrying about food, so they may have a propensity to wolf it down. Get ready for takeoff – we’ve put together a list of safety tips when flying with a dog Nothing is more satisfying than stepping out of the house and into your vacation – leaving all of your work and worries behind at home. If you are lucky, you don’t have to leave your dog at home – you can bring him with you! Most dogs travel well but there are some precautions you need to take to ensure your dog’s safety, especially if flying is part of your travel plans. Here’s what you need to know before flying with a dog. Preparing for the Trip The most important thing you can do is to book your trip early to ensure that you are able to get your dog on the same flight as you. In most cases, airlines will only allow one or two dogs per flight so you need make your arrangements as early as possible – do not buy your own ticket until you ensure that there is room for your dog as well. If possible, arrange for a direct flight so your dog doesn’t have to go through the stress of being transferred to and from several planes. In regard to the timing of your flight, try to choose weekday flights when the airport is less likely to be crowded – the grounds crew will also be less busy and more likely to handle your dog with care. To avoid exposing your dog to extreme temperatures, choose morning or evening flights during the summer and midday flights during the winter. The type of carrier you choose may depend on the size of the dog and whether your dog is traveling in the cabin or in the cargo hold. If your dog doesn’t already have one, you might consider a microchip as well. First Time In US Cats Test Positive For COVID-19

Two pet cats in New York have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) and are the first to do so in the United States. Both are expected to make a full recovery. While what we know about COVID-19 changes on a regular basis, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) have reported that two cats living in separate areas of New York State have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The cats, both pets, are the first to test positive in the United States, and both have a mild respiratory illness but are expected to make a full recovery. The number of animals reportedly positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the world is still small, and those that have were mostly cases where they’d been in close contact with a person who had COVID-19. The cat lived in a home where no individuals were confirmed as ill or symptomatic with COVID-19. It is believed that the virus may have been transmitted to the cat by mildly ill or household members who were asymptomatic, or through an infected person not inside the cat’s home. The second cat’s owner tested positive for COVID-19 before its mild respiratory illness, but another cat in the house has shown no signs of symptoms or the virus. It’s still not recommended to do routine testing for animals, as the number of positive cases out of millions of animals and pets of those infected is still negligible. But, because The World Health Organization for Animal Health (OIE) classifies SARS-CoV-2 as an emerging disease, the USDA must report any confirmed animal infections to the OIE. It’s important to note that there is still no evidence that pets play any part in spreading the virus in the United States or anywhere else for that matter. This awareness is important so no companion animals are treated poorly as a result of concerns they spread the virus. The Centers For Disease Control continues to suggest more research is needed to see if and how different animals, pets included, are possibly affected. Early research suggests that cats and ferrets may be more prone, but there’s nothing conclusive about why that might be. Good tips to continue following during this time are: Keep cats indoors if possible and prevent them from interacting with other people or animals.Keep dogs on leash when outside walking, and stay 6 feet from other animals and people.Avoid dog parks and/or public places where dogs and groups of people may gather.Keep your pets from interacting with other animals or people outside of your home. If you suspect you are ill with COVID-19, or it is confirmed, it’s wise to isolate yourself from your pets and other animals. Try to have another member of your household take care of your pets if you’re sick to avoid contact. Don’t snuggle, pet or share food with your pet, and don’t let your pet kiss, lick or share your bedding if you’re sick. Most important, if you are the caregiver for your pet when you’re sick, cover your face and make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before and after you have any interaction. Dogs Can Party With Snoopy This October During Dog Days At Kings Islan

Get ready for a howling good time – Dogs can get their Halloween thrills at the theme park’s Dog Days celebration October has begun and that means all the fun fall activities, including Halloween. Kings Island amusement park is offering a great opportunity for humans and their pets – the chance to party with the top beagle himself, Snoopy! Every Sunday in October (October 5, 12, 19 and 26), dogs are invited to Dog Days at Kings Island, located in Mason, Ohio. Both humans and dogs will get party at Snoopy’s Halloween Party at Soak City. Each dog is allowed to bring one adult hu – er, each adult is allowed to bring one dog. Costumes are encouraged. Kings Island says there will be a dog zone with local vendors and activities, a doggy parade, a dog costume contest and a treat trail (for both humans and dogs). Snoopy judges the costume contest. Plus, bandanas will also be handed out to the first 1,000 dogs each Sunday. Kings Island is expecting at least 500 dogs each event There will also be an area where dogs can do their… business (provided you pick up after your dog!). All dogs are welcome, provided they are neutered or spayed and are up to date on their shots. Humans also need to keep their dogs on a regular six-foot leash, no retractable leashes. Dog Days at Kings Island runs from noon to 6 p.m. every Sunday in October, starting October 5 (that’s this Sunday!). Kings Island is located north of Cincinnati off Interstate 71. Daily tickets are $37.99 a person, but dogs are free. They have to stay in the Soak City area. There’s a waiver that people need to sign for their dog. This little guy’s willing to defend his territory by any means necessary … even if it means employing a little bit of acrobatic action. YouTube user Mirjana Nesic’s pooch probably had no idea what he was in for when he went to greet the neighbor’s new puppy. Out for a daily walk, the black lab noticed a puppy in a gated yard and went up to say hello, tail-a-waggin’. Too young to be well-versed in his social graces, the diminutive pooch unleashes his ferocious puppy bark (spoiler: it’s not that ferocious) and startles the pants off Nesic’s poor dog! Here’s where it gets cute: Now, this pup either has superpowers OR he’s on a trampoline. We’re going to go with the latter option (though we’d like to believe the former!).
